Theme 4: Second blog post

This week, the seminar was canceled therefore it’s just possible to reflect on the lecture and the knowledge process during the week.

In the lecture we discussed about quantitative researches, usually when you choose a quantitative research method you want to understand complex phenomena. During the week I improved my knowledge and understanding when and why to use a quantitative method. When using a quantitative method the researcher wants to explore with basis of previously knowledge how things are and then justify the reason for being so. The overall goal is to advance knowledge in the field, knowledge production! The selected strategy for a study will guide the researcher in the development of the study and ensure to answer the formulated problem. The paper of Drumming in Immersive Virtual Reality started out from existing theories about body ownership, they used prior theoretical knowledge to predict if change in body illusion will occur and if there is any relationships among the variables. With the statistical data that was collected they obtained a result that could conform or reject hypothesis (that the form of the body would impact behavior). When choosing a hypothetical method the researchers should start with previously theoretical knowledge, then formulate hypotheses and test them. If the result is true it should be supported from the theoretical framework. (Dresch et al, 2015)

We also discussed about different techniques for gathering data and analysis with focus on questionnaires and statistical measurement. My chosen paper Podcast a technology for all, used questionnaires to gather data and Drumming in Immersive Virtual Reality used statistical measurement to analyze data. It was good to refresh my knowledge, (from previous courses) about research methods and data gathering. I understand that is important to communicate with other researchers to acquire knowledge production. Therefor it’s important to consider how the research is relate to others, for example how Drumming in Immersive Virtual Reality is related to Putting Yourself! in the Skin of a Black Avatar Reduces Implicit Racial Bias.

Reflecting on the reading process and knowledge that we have gained throughout the different themes its all come back to knowledge production. Even Socrates, Kant, Benjamin, Adorno & Horkheimer talks about knowledge production but in a more complex context than in the two last themes. We started out with a broader perspective to a more detailed view, as this week's theme

  1. A very well written post, thank you. It seems you've understood this weeks theme very well, and I think knowledge production was a good way of putting it, altough I wish you would have elaborated a bit more. I agree with your understanding of quantitative research and also think this weeks theme was a good refreshment of research methods and data gathering, a good reminder as to when and why to use a quantitative method.

  2. Hi! Thanks for great reflection! Term of knowledge production was new for me before I started this course. We are all knowledge consumers, and transition from consumer to the producer requires a great shift in critical thinking. Moreover, I think knowledge production is like a vicious circle as even being a researcher (knowledge producer) you are knowledge consumer too, as you base your research on prior works. I see knowledge production as this huge mechanism that accelerates growth, intelligence and creativeness.

    Great job!

  3. Hi! I really enjoyed reading your interesting reflection and you make some good points. I agree with you on that using already existing theory is a good way to make new theories and that this can be seen as knowledge production. This also shows the importance of older research papers as they form the base for new findings.

I like the link that you make with our previously discussed themes. I also think that all themes are somehow connected and that we started broad and that we are narrowing it.

  4. Nice summary! Choosing the right method is extremely important for any research as they allow to examine the phenomena at different levels. For example, qualitative approaches are good for establishing the causal relations while qualitative ones allow us to find new variables than affect certain situation. I liked the way you've linked this theme to the first ones - it seemed that methods had not that much in common with the Kant's works but indeed it's the same topic about the knowledge production and perception.

  5. A very well written summary of the quantitive research topic. You seem to have understood what quantitive research is about, when it is most applicable and how to perform it. Especially your mention of other research papers and how the findings are connected and spark other research is quite inspiring.
When you talk about knowledge production in connection to the previous topics: I see this course as a kind of history lesson on research: where did the modern research come from (Plato, Kant, Benjamin, Adorno & Horkheimer) and how do we perform it today (quantitative, qualitative, design).

  6. Nice connection to knowledge production. Also, the practical example about drumming showcases that you have grasped quantitative research and how it can be applied. That you specify where the hypotheses are used helps to avoid confusion as well.

On another note, I've also studied research methods before but from an entirely different perspective. This course is more philosophical and theoretical, whereas my previous courses were applied and practical. All useful, but at the same time this feels new.

  7. I think it's really interesting that you brought up the aspect of age when discussing the artcle Drumming in Immersive Virtual Reality. I did not think about that at all, and I don't remember the authors bringing it up either. I don't know if there is any difference in body perception depending on age, but I definitely think it's worth investigating. For example, are you more "used to" your own body the older you are? Very interesting to think about!

Moreover I appreciated you reflections and learnings from the lecture, There were some thing there that I totally missed during the theme.
